Yes I've heard that too.  The editor of my copy of gudarthadipika thinks 
it is MS though.

I think this makes more sense because the Nagas only start being mentioned 
in Medieval times and it makes sense the political turmoil of those times 
would require an armed response whereas it doesn't really fit with 
Shankaracharya times.
