all these discussions are done with reference to one who doesn't have
sAdhana chatuShThaya sampatti to its fullest extent but is
nevertheless a j~nAni in the sense of having aparokSha Atmaj~nAna. as
shrI raviSha~Nkar mentioned, the process of becoming a j~nAni is not a
linear one. it is true beyond doubt that Atmaj~nAna cannot be attained
by one who doesn't have vairAgya. but for *complete* cessation of the
natural tendency of the mind to identify with the body, a steady
abidance in Atmaj~nAna along with tyAga, vairAgya etc. are recommended
by AchArya himself. if a yogi is defined as one who strives to attain
the goal of yoga, namely chittavRtti nirodha, then the very fact that
steady abidance in Atmaj~nAna leads to chittavRtti nirodha (see BUBh.
1.4.7.) implies that AchArya is recommending the j~nAnimAtra to become
a yogi.
