In the Brahmasutra bhashya 4.3.10 and 11 this is discussed briefly. In the
latter sutra bhashyam Shankara cites a smRti:

This smRti [When the time of final dissolution comes at the close of the
life of Hiranyagarbha, all of them, with enlightenment already attained,
enter into the supreme state along with Hiranyagarbha] is identified as
contained in kUrma purANa pUrva bhAga XII.269 in Swami Gambhirananda's
English translation.

Shankara has said in the earlier sutra bhashya: This kind of liberation by
stages has to be admitted on the strength of the Upanishadic texts speaking
of non-return, etc. For we established earlier that it is incomprehensible
that the supreme Brahman should be reached by any process of moving forward
(that is 'leaving the body after death'. There is a Br.Up. mantra saying:
for the Jnani there is no 'going out of the body' for transmigration, his
prANa-s dissolve here itself.
The Logic is: if he is a jnani there will be going out
after death. Since there is a going out through the suShumnA nADi for the
upAsakas, to brahma loka, and also since they are said to attain liberation
at the end of the brahma loka tenure, it is established that there is
something called krama mukti which is distinct from sadyo mukti.
