[Advaita-l] [advaitin] HOROSCOPE Matching in Hindu Marriages

Dear Jayanayananji,

The study of horoscope for marrages was practised in the ancient times, and there is not an iota of doubt on it. However in the Gandharva style of mariiage (i.e., love marriage), considered by many to be the highest form of marriage, the question of horoscope matching is not called for. Bhima and Hidimba as well as Lord Krishna and Mother Rukmini married in the Gandharva style. Mother Rukmini sent her love letter to Lord Krishna and he reciprocated by taking her away from being forcibly married to another person,

However, one must keep in mind that the rashi was used in pre Mahabharata times only for determining the Suryodaya lagna (or the Ascendant, also called the Rising Sun). In those days only the Nakshatra was used in astrology. Considering the adverse position of a particular powerful graha, Janaka had the marriage of Lord Ram and Mother Sita performed in a particular nakshatra, so that the ill-effect of that graha could be circumvented, or at least minimised. After the Mahabharata times, the Abhijit nakshatra was dropped and there remained only 27 nakshatras in the Zodiac. The 27 nakshatras were equally divide into twelve zones and accommodated in the twelve rashis and from that time onwards the astrology, which we follow today) came to be used. The fall of the Abhijit and the making of the Rashi-chakra with the nakshatras in the rashis, is a big subject, and is not relevant to the main subject of these groups of ours.

Regards,
Sunil KB

I've been wondering whether the use
of Horoscopes for Hindu match-making was present in ancient
 times or is comparatively recent.

 One
of the means of knowing Dharma or Ethics in the Hindu
context is to look at the Itihasas such as the Ramayana and
the Mahabharata. Surprisingly, I've not been able to
locate a single instance of Astrological Horoscopes (or
Astrology in general) being used in the context of a
marriage in these two Ancient Epics!

 Here
are some examples of marriages conducted in religious
 history:

 (1)
 Ramayana: Rama and Sita

Choice of Groom: Whosoever can string (or Break!) the Bow of
 Shiva.

 (2)
Ramayana: Bharata to Maandavi; Shatrughna to Shrutakiirti

Choice of Groom: Proposed by Sage Vishvamitra.

 (3)
 Mahabharata: Arjuna and Draupadi

Choice of Groom: Whosoever can shoot a target by looking at
 its reflection in water.

 (4)
 Mahabharata: Bhima and Hidimba

 Choice of Groom: Love!

 (5)
 Mahabharata: Krishna and Rukmini

 Choice of Groom: "Carried away"!
