Shri S. Jayanarayananji,

Yes, really so. That is why i wrote a whole lot of things, which most astrologers don't know, that rashi was used in the pre-Mahabharata times only for Suryodaya lagna. Please read the Ramayana to see why Janaka was particularly careful to choose the marriage time.

As regards the Manu Smriti it has many more verses than quoted by you. Did Manu decry the practice of Swayamvara, where the girl chooses the groom.

Please also show me where was the marriage of Shakuntala and Dushyanta opposed by any rishi or muni. Shakuntala's foster father approved her going to Dushyanta.

The study of horoscope for marrages was practised in the
ancient times, and there is not an iota of doubt on it.

 Really?!
Then please quote a single marriage in the Ramayana or the
Mahabharata where Horoscope match-matching is done!

 >
However in the Gandharva style of mariiage (i.e., love
marriage), considered by many to be the highest form of
 marriage,

 Gandharva
marriage is NOT the highest according to Manu, who considers
it among the "permitted, but not highly approved"
 marriages for Brahmins!

 Manu
 Dharma Sutra (Chapter 3):

 20.
Now listen to (the) brief (description of) the following
eight marriage-rites used by the four castes (varna) which
partly secure benefits and partly produce evil both in this
 life and after death.
 21.
(They are) the rite of Brahman (Brahma), that of the gods
(Daiva), that of the Rishis (Arsha), that of Pragapati
(Pragapatya), that of the Asuras (Asura), that of the
Gandharvas (Gandharva), that of the Rhashasas (Rakshasa),
and that of the Pisakas (Paisaka).
 22.
Which is lawful for each caste (varna) and which are the
virtues or faults of each (rite), all this I will declare to
you, as well as their good and evil results with respect to
 the offspring.
 23.
One may know that the first six according to the order
(followed above) are lawful for a Brahmana, the four last
for a Kshatriya, and the same four, excepting the Rakshasa
rite, for a Vaisya and a Sudra.
 24.
The sages state that the first four are approved (in the
case) of a Brahmana, one, the Rakshasa (rite in the case) of
a Kshatriya, and the Asura (marriage in that) of a Vaisya
 and of a Sudra.

the question of horoscope matching is not called for. Bhima
and Hidimba as well as Lord Krishna and Mother Rukmini
married in the Gandharva style. Mother Rukmini sent her love
letter to Lord Krishna and he reciprocated by taking her
away from being forcibly married to another person,

However, one must keep in mind that the rashi was used in
pre Mahabharata times only for determining the Suryodaya
lagna (or the Ascendant, also called the Rising Sun). In
those days only the Nakshatra was used in astrology.
Considering the adverse position of a particular  powerful
graha, Janaka had the marriage of Lord Ram and Mother Sita
performed in a particular nakshatra, so that the ill-effect
of that graha could be circumvented, or at least minimised.
After the Mahabharata times, the Abhijit nakshatra was
dropped and there remained only 27 nakshatras in the Zodiac.
The 27 nakshatras were equally divide into twelve zones and
accommodated in the twelve rashis  and from that time
onwards the astrology, which we follow today) came to be
used. The fall of the Abhijit and the making of the
Rashi-chakra with the nakshatras in the rashis, is a big
subject, and is not relevant to the main subject of these
 groups of ours.

        I've been wondering whether the
 use
of Horoscopes for Hindu match-making was
 present in ancient
 times or is comparatively
 recent.

 One
of the means of knowing Dharma or Ethics in the
 Hindu
context is to look at the Itihasas
 such as the Ramayana and
 the Mahabharata.
Surprisingly, I've not been able to
locate a single instance of Astrological
 Horoscopes (or
 Astrology in general) being
used in the context of a
 marriage in these
 two Ancient Epics!

 Here
 are some examples of
 marriages conducted in religious
 history:

 (1)
 Ramayana: Rama and Sita

 Choice of Groom:
Whosoever can string (or Break!) the Bow of
 Shiva.

 (2)
 Ramayana: Bharata to
 Maandavi; Shatrughna to Shrutakiirti

 Choice of Groom:
 Proposed by Sage Vishvamitra.

 (3)
 Mahabharata: Arjuna and
 Draupadi

 Choice of
Groom: Whosoever can shoot a target by looking at
 its reflection in water.

 (4)
 Mahabharata: Bhima and
 Hidimba

 Choice of
 Groom: Love!

 (5)
 Mahabharata: Krishna and Rukmini

 Choice of Groom:
 "Carried away"!
