 In verses 34, 35 of the vivekachUdAmani, Sri BhagavatpAda emphasizes so
much the compassion of the Guru. He is said to have composed a
Gurvashtakam, and it is also available on the web, with English

Let a man raise himself by his own efforts. Let him not degrade himself.
Because a person's best friend or his worst enemy is, none other than his
own self. (BG 6.5)
