I have heard another interesting explanation for this slOka.
AcArya DEscribes graded forms of bhakti in this slOka-
from the lowest grade to the highest grade.

1. The fallen seeds of an ankOLa tree are supposed
to go back to the base of the tree at the onset of mansoon.

This type of devotion is dependent on kAla (time). kAlAvacCinna.
The devotee goes to the temple on SivarAtri or vaikuNTha EkAdaSi.
Next day even though he may pass the temple, he will not bother
even to turn his head.

2. Whenever an iron needle comes into the the field of a magnet
it is attracted to it.

This type of devotion is independent of time but is dependent
on location (space). KAlAnavacCinna paraM tu dESAvacCinna.
The devotee remembers god whenever he passes a temple or a
holy place or in the presence of holy men. But once he moves
away from their vicinity the devotion is no more there.

3.A sAdhvI remembers her husband whereever she may be and at
all times.

This type of devotion is dESakAlAnavacChinna. It is independent of
both space and time.

4. The creaper is always attached to the tree that supports it
and withers away if it is separated from it.

The difference between this and the previous is this. A sAdhvi can
be away from her husband. A creeper cannot. A sAdhvi may
continue to live after her husband dies. A creeper cannot live
if its support is removed.

5. But still the creeper and the tree are two separate entities.
But once the river joins the ocean, you cannot distinguish the
water from the river and that of the ocean anymore.

The devotee and the god are one.

regards,

Sarma.
