As per devi bhaagavata there are 28 vyasa and kR^iShNadvaipaayana is mentioned as being the last one.
 
Thus vyaasa appears to ba an upaadhii and not a vyaktinaama.
 
(1) brhmaa  (2) prajaapatii  (3) shukraacaarya  (4) bR^ihaspatii  (5) suurya  (6) yama  (7) indra  (8) vasiShTa (9) saarasvata  (10) tridhaamaa (11) trivR^iSha (12) bhaaradvaaja  (13) antarixa  (14) dharma  (15) trayyaruNii  (16) dha.njaya  (17) medhaatithii  (18) vratii   (19) atrii  20) gautam  (21) haryaatmaa  22) vaajashravaa  23) soma aamuShyaayaNa  (24) tR^iNabi.nduu  (25) bhaargava  (26) shaktii  (27) paraashara  (28) kR^iShNadvaipaayana.

identification of bArarAyaNa with vyAsa (veda vyAsa), Krishna
dvaipAyana.........
