This being 'cognized' by the Self alone is what makes avidya/mAyA a
bhAvarUpa vastu, for only that can become a viShaya for being cognized which
is an existent entity.
Your citing the Mundakopanshat bhashyam introduction is quite revealing:
अविद्यादिसंसारकारणं च अत्यन्तमवसादयति विनायति....
