Have been seeing over the past many years. Every time it is shown that this is
somehow untenable citing various reasons, showing various evidence, the usual
answer is to quote this again and again. Amazing!
What these kind of people forget is that repeated assertion is not their
property and does not make something right. Does it ever occur to them that the
other party can do that too?
So yes here it is. Above quote does not address any of the issues of non-clarity
and hence not of any use.
Now some clarification in light of a private mail: 1) No one is saying shankara
is against worship of pratima-s etc. 2) The objective is not to prove gaNesha is
a tAmasika devata. We do not hold this deplorable view as in our tradition
gaNesha upAsana is of great importance.
It is only being pointed out that, seems to shankara think otherwise and that
his view is outdated(not the word again)
But seriously, did you think the other party never heard of the gaNesha
atharvashIrSha or the gaNeshA & mudgala purANa...
If one is so intent on not looking outside their well, let it be so.

भूतानि यान्ति भूतेज्या यान्ति मद्याजिनोऽपि माम्॥९.२५॥
अन्तःकरणोपाधिगुणत्रयभेदात् त्रिविधा याजिनः। सात्विका देवव्रताः, राजसाः
पितृव्रताः, तथा तामसा भूतेज्याः। शंकरभगवत्पादैर्यदुक्तं भगवद्गीताभाष्ये-
"भूतानि विनायकमातृगणचतुर्भगिन्यादीनि यान्ति भूतेज्याः", इत्यत्र विनायकपदं
भूतं सूचयति, न तु विनायकं देवं गणपतिम्। शिवविष्णुदेवीविषयकाणामिव
गणपत्यथर्वशीर्षाद्युपनिषत्सु गणपतेः विषयाणां जागरूकत्वात्। "त्वमेव सर्वं
खल्विदं ब्रह्मासि। त्वं साक्षादात्मासि नित्यम्।" इत्याद्युपनिषद्वाक्यैः
परब्रह्मगणेशयोरभेदमुक्तत्वात्। गणेशमुद्गलपुराणयोः पुराणान्तरेष्वपि तत्र तत्र
गणेशमाहात्म्यभागाश्चेति शतशः प्रमाणानि तत्तद्विद्भिः स्पष्टीकृतत्वात्।
"गणानां त्वा गणपतिम्" इति मन्त्रेण वेदत्रयेऽपि स्तूयमानस्य देवस्य गणपतेः
पूजाराधनस्य युक्तत्वात्। श्रुतौ प्रमाणशिखायां स्थितायां प्रमाणान्तरगवेषणस्य
"करभमनुसरामः कामधेनौ स्थितायाम्" इति न्यायेन निरसनीयत्वाच्च।
आनन्दः
yAnti devavratA devAn pitRUn yAnti pitRuvratAH|
BhUtAni yAnti BhUtejyA yAnti madyAjino&pi mAm||9.25||
antaHkaraNopAdhiguNatrayaBhedAt trividhA yAjinaH| sAtvikA devavratAH,
rAjasAH pitRuvratAH, tathA tAmasA BhUtejyAH| SaMkaraBagavatpAdairyaduktaM
BhagavadgItABhAShye- SivaviShNudevIviShayakANAmiva
gaNapatyatharvaSIrShAdyupaniShatsu
gaNapateH viShayANAM jAgarUkatvAt| "tvameva sarvaM KhalvidaM brahmAsi| tvaM
sAkShAdAtmAsi nityam|" ityAdyupaniShadvAkyaiH
parabrahmagaNeSayoraBhedamuktatvAt| gaNeSamudgalapurANayoH purANAntareShvapi

spaShTIkRutatvAt| "gaNAnAM tvA gaNapatim" iti mantreNa vedatraye&pi
