Dear Jaladhar,
//
As an aside, the six vedangas are iconically portrayed as six Goddesses.
Of particular note is shikShA who carries a daNda (stick or club.) This
is to beat people who mispronounce the mantras!
//
Your statement of above reminds of several pATha bhEdAs and mis-pronounce
of several riks and unfortunately are being handed down in the saMpradAya pravAha.
Where exactly is the dOSha, nobody cares for.
For instance:
Srisukta: jAtavEdo “ma” Avaha / “mama” Avaha ??????
In namaka pATha:
namastE astu bhagavan vishvEshwarAya mahAdEvAya ……
trikAgni-kAlAya (trikAlAgnikAlAya) ?
In Durga Sukta:
vishvAni no durgahA jAtavedassindhu na nAvA duritAtiparshhi |
agne atrivanmanasA gR^iNAno.asmAkaM bodhyavita tanUnAm.h
The mula patha of durga sukta alongwith sAyaNa bhAShya has "bhUtvavita tanUnAm" instead of "bodhyavita tanUnAm”.
So, is it “bhUtvavita tanUnAm” or “bOdhyavita tanUnAm” ????? Here is the
sAyaNa bhAShya for the above rik of Durga Sukta:
//
hE jAtavEdah - durgahA - sarvAsA mApadA mapahantA - tvam;
vishvAni - duritA - sarvANi pApAni; nAvA - sindhum - na = samudraiva
na-iti-ivArthE; nah-asmAn;ati-parShi = atishayEna tArayasi;
hE agnE - atrivat - AdhyAtmikAditApatrayarahitatvEna "atri" shabdavAchyo
jivanmukto maharshih - "AtmoupamyEna bhUtAnAm - dayAm kurvIta mAnavah"
ityEtacchAstra - manusrutya - "sarvE cha sukhinah santu - sarvE santu nirAmayAh"
- ityEvam manasA yathA sarvadA bhAvayati - tathA tvamapi - manasA griNAnah guNA
nucchArayan - bhAvayan; asmAkam - tanUnAm - avitA - rakShitA - bhUtvA - bodhi -
budhyasya; sAvadhAno bhava - iti arthah
//
"asmAkam tanUnAm avitA bOdhi" is the sandhi which means "kindly alert (bOdhi) yourself like a jivanmukta maharishi and protect (avitA) us (our bodies - asmAkam tanUnAm).
In Sringeri Pitha, under the supervision of Acharya, the above 3 riks are chanted as “ma avaha”; “trikAlAgni-kAlAya” & “bOdhyavita-tanUnAM”.
So, I don’t know how exactly the shikShAdhiShThAtri dEvata punishes???
Regs,
Sriram
