It is said (in Mahabharata or Bhagavata) that that all imperfections and
sins are destroyed in kali yuga by chanting of God's name as chanting of
God's name is special dharma of Kali yuga. If your father has chanted God's
name for most part of his life, I am sure he would attain Shreyas.

Regarding what you can do, I feel doing the regularly the rituals related
to pitr's would be very beneficial. You may also take sankalpa and perform
regularly any Sadhana you may feel comfortable with. Say for example,
everyday you do 1 mala japa of Shiva panchakshari mantra by taking sankalpa
that you are doing it for the Shreyas of your departed father. That would
definitely help.
