IMHO: The best analogy as an explanation, in my understanding, is given in munDaka-upanishad - 
यथोर्णनाभिः सृजते गृह्णते च
यथा पृथिव्यामोषधयः सम्भवन्ति ।
यथा सतः पुरुषात् केशलोमानि
तथाऽक्षरात् सम्भवतीह विश्वम्  ॥ 
So then, whether it is the 'upaadaana-kaaraNa' and/or the 'nimitta-kaaraNa' and/or both/none depends upon how those two technical-terms are defined. Based on those definitions the learned ones can engage in whatever learned debates.   - Keshava PRASAD Halemane  mOkShakaamaarthadharmah  janmanaa jaayatE jantuḥ |  samskaaraat hi bhavEt dvijaḥ ||  vEda-paaThaat bhavEt vipra |  brahma jnaanaat hi braahmaNah ||
