Much before Appayya Dikshitar, Veda Vyasa himself has said in the
Mahabharata:

रुद्रो नारायणश्चैव सत्त्वमेकं द्विधा कृतम्।
लोके चरति कौन्तेय व्यक्तिस्थं सर्वकर्मसु।। 12-350-27a 12-350-27b.

It is One Principle that appears in the world as Rudra and Narayana.

No one can say that it is an interpolation by a later Advaitin for even the
11th CE Andhra Bharatamu has annotated this verse along with a number of
other Hari-Hara abheda verses from the original MB.
