Dear Praveenji,
Further to my last mail, I wish to point out that there has been considerable efforts to ascertain the date of Adi Shankara, by many well-meaning people, who do not believe in the 509 BCE date.. One such person was Sri R.M.Umesh, the Press Secretary of the Shringeri Math, who in mid-1981 wrote a letter addressed to the King of Nepal, to find out if Adi Shankara visited Nepal during 400 - 500 B.C.. A letter from the Guthi Samsthan of Nepal, with an initial, was sent to Shri Umesh as reply, and it said as follows:
["We have not yet found any record so as to prove that Shree Adi Shankaracharya has effected a visit to Nepal during 400 - 500 B.C."]
Shri Umeshji took from this letter that Adi Shankaracharya did not visit Nepal, but the Nepal history does say that Adi Shankaracharya did visit Nepal. To my mind, it would have been better if Shri Umeshji would have asked, during which Nepal king's rule, did Adi Shankaracharya visit Nepal. The date of Adi Shankara can be certainly found out by historical means,

Thank you for the information. The book, I referred to,
appears to be the thesis of Dr. Shastry submitted to the
Karnatak university in 1976. The aim of the thesis, as
stated, was to review the history of the Sringeri math from
the 14th century CE to 19th century CE and for that purpose
the thesis is a contribution.
As regards the Guruparampara, he states that from 820 (CE)
to the commencement of Shri Vidya Sankara Tirtha's
accesion, the dates cannot be fixed. However he has given
the date of accesion of Shri Bharati Krishna Tirtha and not
the date of accesion of Shri Vidyashankara Tirtha. The
thesis just gives the date of Adi Shankaracharya as 820 CE
and is not concerned with the disclosure of Shri
Satchidananda Shiva Abhinava Narasimha Bharati, that Adi
Shankara was born on the 14th year of the reign of
Vikramaditya.
