Actually this is the way Shankara sees the Taittiriya Upanishad mantra :
asad vaa idamagra aasiit. tato vai sadajaayata.  It would look like the
Upanishad is teaching that 'there was non-existence before and existence
came from that.'  Shankara clarifies that asat means unmanifest cause and
sat is the manifest kaarya.
