In the Jivanmukti Viveka, Swami Vidyaranya gives a definition of Vasana:

Translation: That which generates mental impressions, such as anger and
the like, rising up all of a sudden and without any thought of the past or
the future, is called vasana (latent impression), for, it is the something
that saturates the mind with the vasana (literally smell or fragrance) of
every previous experience.
