Here is an explanation of the segment 'smruti-rUpa' in the adhyasa
definition, for whatever it might be worth. This is from the Ratnaprabha:
स्मृतिरूप इति ।
स्मर्यते इति स्मृतिः सत्यरजतादिः तस्य रूपमिव रूपमस्येति स्मृतिरूपः ।
स्मर्यमाणसदृश इत्यर्थः । सादृश्योक्त्या स्मर्यमाणादारोप्यस्य भेदात् ,
नान्यथाख्यातिरित्युक्तं भवति ।
सादृश्यमुपपादयति -
पूर्वदृष्टेति ।
दृष्टं दर्शनम् , संस्कारद्वारा पूर्वदर्शनादवभास्यत इति पूर्वदृष्टावभासः ।
तेन संस्कारजन्यज्ञानविषयत्वं स्मर्यमाणारोप्ययोः सादृश्यमुक्तं भवति,
स्मृत्यारोपयोः संस्कारजन्यत्वात् ।
The word smritirupa in the bhashya means: smriti-sadrishah, not smriti
itself. Adhyasa is 'like' a recollection; not recollection itself. When I
recollect today what I saw yesterday, that is smriti, and it is not
mithya/adhyasa. However, in the case of adhyasa, there is an element of
smriti, the recollection of a silver, for example, seen earlier in a shop,
etc. This smaranam of the silver has a significant role in bringing about
the adhyasa.
