Arunachalam,
   MahaPeriava has given a series of wonderful lectures around 1932 on
Bagavathpatha.  Has indicated an answer to the question in this context,
these lectures are translated by Sri TMP Mahadevan.  Relevant text extract

Before the debate began, the two participants came to an understanding.
Sankara said to Mandana: "If I win you should take sannyasa, if you win I
shall become a house-holder *after performing the appropriate expiatory
ceremony or I will continue to perform expiation until death*"
