[Advaita-l] ***UNCHECKED*** Vishnu performs prayaschittam for killing asura-s - Mahabharata

In the Aranya Parvan of the Mahabharata, there is a discourse on the
various pilgrim centers and the greatness thereof:
03080088c तीर्थं कुरुवरश्रेष्ठ त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्
03080088e दृमीति नाम्ना विख्यातं सर्वपापप्रमोचनम्
03080089a यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवा उपासन्ते महेश्वरम्
03080089c तत्र स्नात्वार्चयित्वा च रुद्रं देवगणैर्वृतम्
03080089e जन्मप्रभृति पापानि कृतानि नुदते नरः
03080090a दृमी चात्र नरश्रेष्ठ सर्वदेवैरभिष्टुता
03080090c तत्र स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र हयमेधमवाप्नुयात्
03080091a जित्वा यत्र महाप्राज्ञ विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना
03080091c पुरा शौचं कृतं राजन्हत्वा दैवतकण्टकान्
Here it is said that in a place called 'Drumi' where Maheswara (Shiva)
presides, Brhma and other gods perform penance. In the yore Vishnu, having
fought and killed many asura-s, performed prayashchittam here.
Sri Appayya Dikshitar cites the above verses in his 'Bharata Saara Sangraha
Stotram' and also comments on it.
We have heard and often debated whether it was valid to say Rama installed
Shivalinga at Rameswaram as prayashchittam for having killed Ravana.

For instance, apart from many puranas, the Skanda Purana, in the Suta
samhita 1.13. says:

सेतुमध्ये महातीर्थं गन्धमादनपर्वतम् |
यत्र स्नात्वा महाभक्त्या राघवः सह सीतया || 101 ||
लक्ष्मणेन तथैवान्यैः सुग्रीवप्रमुखैर्वरैः |
मुनिभिर्देवगन्धर्वैर्यक्षविद्याधरादिभिः | 102 ||
राक्षसेशवधोत्पन्नां ब्रह्महत्यां विधाय स: |
प्रतिष्ठाप्य महादेवं श्रीमद्रामेश्वराभिधम् || 103 ||
