Actually I was able to listen to a very great quantum of Swami
Paramarthananda ji's recorded classes by adjusting the speed just one level
higher and not more than that. That level I have felt is optimum and it
does not distort the words and nothing is lost.  A speed higher than that
would result in what you have stated.
