I might add here that commentators on Smritis make it clear that the
Shastric view is not that the girl has to be eight or something. It sets
the lowest limit at 8 and the recommended upper limit at three years from
menarche, which could say 15 or 16 years. [Grihyasutras especially speak of
the marriage of women post menarche].
