[Advaita-l] Puranas as Pramana

Namaste,
They can be accepted to the extent that they do not contradict the basic
teaching of Vedanta. They are very useful in explaining several practical
aspects of sadhana. For instance, if we talk of tapas, we have numerous
stories on sattvic tapas, rajasa tapas and tamasa tapas in the puranas.
Similarly on several other aspects such as charity, non-violence, stories
on svadharma in Mahabharatam and so on. Some embarrassing stories such as
Shiva beating the sages with his lingam etc., can be avoided or if some
symbolic meaning exists, it has to be explored.
