No, I don't think it is absence of cognitive capacity.

The idea that one has somehow unlocked a hitherto forgotten meaning of the
bhAShya which everyone else has misunderstood, that one possesses a secret
that everyone else has lost, is an intoxicating one. Secret societies
around the world have thrived on this human need.
