They are not exactly.  They are conducted by independent organizations 
which have the patronage of Shringeri and Kanchi.

There are two main types; for Veda and Shastras.  For Veda the test is on 
memorization of part or whole of a shakha and more advanced, vikrtis such 
as krama, jata, ghana etc.  For shastras it is memorization and 
explanation of the classic texts of a particular field of knowledge 
starting from the basic introductions to the most advanced.  A basic 
background in vyakarana and tarka is necessary for all subjects.

This is different.  It is a symposium where learned vidvans in different 
shastras give original works on subjects in their area of expertise.
