A friend, Amrut, writes:
I have created a few tools that help proofreading between two texts. It
compares Sanskrit texts of the same Yoga Sūtra or Gītā śloka or commentary
on the same Sūtra or Śloka.
It is the Sanskrit Proofreading Suite v4.0.0.
*These are HTML files, that can be downloaded on your desktop PC. Simply
Double click and it will open in your default browser. Start using it. Once
loaded, they work completely offline. No internet is required.*
For each tool, there is one HTML file. So it is easy to use, move to
another folder or share with someone.
Please find Google Drive link:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1oSGTV10oqHrZ5ViYCM6dpD2MBbERljgu?usp=drive_link
The instructions are given on my website
https://www.advaita-vedanta.in/Sanskrit-proof-reading-conversion-tool
The website link will take you to a page which will have a live tool which
you can use without downloading. Once the page is fully loaded, it does not
require internet to function.
The page has a writeup / manual which covers -
- Why I created this tool
- What the tool does and
- How to use the tool
*The page has a "Download" button at the bottom of the page just above
footer section and lists five HTML files -*
1. sanskrit_proofreading_suite_v4_0 LCS-sf Pane1.html --> combined tool
2. sanskrit_diff_checker_v1_2_1 FINAL.html --> Sanskrit Text Comparison Tool
3. devanagari_iast_converter_v1_2_0_Claude1 FINAL OK.html --> Devanāgarī to
Roman IAST Transliterator and vice versa (bidirectional)
4. devanagari_iast_converter_v1_2_1 FINAL LARGE WINDOW.html --> Same tool
but with larger window.
5. roman_iast_deva_comparative_spell_checker_v1_0_0-LCS-sf.html -->
Standalone Spell check tool (comparative)
I created this tool as I was contemplating on Yoga Sudhākara and found that
the two online available texts in unicode has typos.
https://www.mccrf.org/2025/01/ysk-pys-set.html -> has more typos (which I
found first)
https://www.sanskritam.world/yogasutra/1/1 -> which I found later (this
site has copied Yoga Sudhāraka from KYM Website which appears to be old and
is better)
https://kymyogavaisharadi.org/display/bhashya/yoga-sudhakara/devanagari#YOS_C01
Hence I decided to cross check two texts and then look at the commentaries
in print editions like Madras Edition, Vani Vilas Press and S.
Kothadaraman's print edition.
How to use this suite (which is combination of 3 tools)
File name: sanskrit_proofreading_suite_v4_0 LCS-sf Pane1.html
Paste the sutra or any text in the left pane (source or reference text) and
the text you wish to check on the right pane (Target). Click the
"*Compare"* button.
A window appears which gives result highlighting differently spelled words.
The highlight is akshara based and not character based or word based.
The results of differently spelled words are also copied in a bottom pane 1
which is devanāgarī pane along with highlighted letters and they are
transliterated into IAST Roman and they are spell chīcked (comparatively)
in the third pane.
The words are pasted in Devanāgarī pane as
Source (S1)
Target (T1)
S2
T2
and so on.
Source words are on odd lines (1,,, etc) and Target words are on even lines
(2,,, etc).
Click "*Load Sample"* Button to understand.
The bottom three panes can also be independently used.
How to use three Bottom Transliteration Cum Comparative Spell Check Panes
Type or paste Devanāgarī words or word pairs in the pane 1, and press
button Devanāgarī to Roman. The text will transliterate into IAST Roman in
pane 2 and it will auto trigger the READ ONLY pane 3 which checks spelling
of source and target words. Source words are on odd lines and target words
are on even lines.
Alternatively, clear pane 1 and 2 and
Type words in IAST Roman in pane 2 and click button *Roman to Devanāgarī* to
transliterate text into Devangārī in pane 1.
To understand click on "*Load Sample"* button on pane 2
Similarly, to understand the working of pane 2, which is a READ ONLY pane,
click on Button *Load Sample* to understand its working.
*You can change the font size via buttons at the top and bottom panes.*
*This tool and the Devanagari to iast converter (bi-directional) are the
only tools that you may need. *
A separate tool for transliteration of Devanāgarī to IAST Roman
(bi-directional) is also developed. It is Devanagari to iast converter
(bi-directional). There is also a Difference checker.
2. Sanskrit Diff Checker
File Name: sanskrit_diff_checker_v1_2_1 FINAL.html
This is just the top panel of the suite, but it highlights a full word and
not the differently spelled letters.
Click "*Load sample"* button for Demo
3. and 4. Devanagari to IAST Roman converter (bi-directional)
File Name #1: devanagari_iast_converter_v1_2_0_Claude1 FINAL OK.html
File Name #2: devanagari_iast_converter_v1_2_1 FINAL LARGE WINDOW.html
There are two versions v1.2.0 has a shorter window, useful for Sūtra or
śloka transliteration and v1.2.1 has a larger window.
Type or paste Devanāgarī text in Left Pane or IAST Roman on right pane and
click the appropriate button.
5. Devanāgarī / IAST Roman Spell Checker (Comparative)
File Name: roman_iast_deva_comparative_spell_checker_v1_0_0-LCS-sf.htm
In this tool, simply type or paste either Devanāgarī or IAST Roman or mixed
text in pairs. Odd numbers are the source words and even nos are for the
target words. Both results are checked *On the fly as you type* and so
there is no need for a button.
Click "*Load Sample"* Button for example.
I hope they are useful. Feel free to share these tools with like-minded
people.
