Yes it was.  As Aniruddhan said, Krshna Dvaipayana aka Veda Vyasa was a
grhastha.  His son Shukadeva was completely free of karma (not even having
yajnopavita, the sine qua non of karma for a Brahmana) and the Bhagavata
Purana calls him superior to his father because of it.
