yathA samiddhaH agniH edhAMsi bhasmasAt kurute tathA GYAna-agniH sarva-karmANi bhasmasAt kurute. (BG 4.37). As a well lit fire burns the wood to ashes, so do the fire of knowledge burns all actions. 

That is the symbolism.
