Vidyaranyamuni (VM) answers this question in JMV itself where a pUrvapakShI
says that "then, Yajnavalkya (YV) was a parokShajnAnI". To this, VM replies
that getting aparokShajnAna from studying YV's teaching proves that his
jnAna was aparokSha. However, his taking vidvatsannyAsa was necessary for
vAsanakShaya and manonAsha, leading to jivanmukti. In other words, YV was a
jnAnI whose videhamukti was *confirmed*, while after vidvatsannyAsa and
practices for *removal of obstacles* in niShThA, he became a jivanmukta.
