See this why you should learn "dry logic."  Then you will actually 
understand why you get criticized.

Nobody was complaining about the "focusing on knowing who I am." part. 
It is the "solely" where you going wrong.   Everyone knows who they are 
even from infancy.  The problem is that "knowledge" is warped by maya.  It 
is necessary to understand that there is a greater knowledge, an expanded 
sense of "I am" that is readily apparent only to a few.  Those fortunate 
ones indeed have no need for disputations and syllogisms.  Therefore they 
abide in silence for what more is there to say?  For the rest of us there 
is Vedanta which as we have discussed here many times a-dvaita not aikya. 
This is why it deals with subjects such as the validity of cognition, who 
or what can be considered a valid source of knowledge etc.

You are like the man who when approached by a hungry beggar responds with 
the recipe for Dhosa.  Yes this is the ultimate solution to the problem 
but there are a few crucial steps in between no?
