I agree with you. Bhagatpada Shankara himself has cited many verses from
the Mahabharata, etc. to strengthen the Upanishadic tattva he has
expounded. So, it only adds to the journey of a mumukshu. 'bahubhiH
sravanam kuryaat' is also a saying.
